Coming Up For Air (Celebrating the Small Things)

Celebrate The Small Things is a weekly bloghop hosted by VikLit where participants simply share the good things from the past week. Click on the logo to your left for a complete list of participants.

I've missed a couple of weeks of blogging. Maybe you didn't notice, (and really, why would you?) but I'm back now. To stay. At least to visit. For a while anyway. Or maybe just today.

Only time will tell.

I don't mean to ignore you or this blog. It's just that my day job has become an even bigger time suck than before. Two more people quit, and (as there are no new hires on which to bet) the meager remaining staff is now placing bets on which staff member will be the next to go (and we all want to go). For reasons I'm not going into at this point in time, I'm the current favorite.

If I had to pick a visual representation of how I've been feeling lately, it would be this:

Sadly, in this scenario, I am Loki.

This said, I hope to turn things around soon. I want to recover my groove and become the enormous green rage monster I once was.

But until then here are the two awesome things and one kind of okay thing I am celebrating this week:

—I had enough time off in a row in order for my niece to come for a visit. We stayed up late, ate way too much sugar, swam in the river, went shopping and played with swords (real ones). It was a fantastic two days, and I'm almost positive her mother may someday let her come and visit again sometime.

—Cupcakes in a jar. I first blogged about these back in April after I watched part of an episode of Shark Tank that featured a Massachusetts based mother-daughter company called Wicked Good Cupcakes. I've been pretty obsessed with them ever since and a few days ago, I was able to go to Boston for the day. The main reason for the visit was the New England Aquarium where I learned that my super fun motion sickness extends to watching fish swim around a curved tank (no more aquarium trips for me). But after that, I used my cupcake radar to find the Wicked Good Cupcake shop in Faneuil Hall. I probably embarrassed myself (and my sister) with my enthusiasm, but as I came home with two cupcakes in a jar, I don't really care.

I'd like to report that they are dangerously delicious, and I am already counting down the days to my next Boston visit so I can try a few more flavors.

—And last but not least, I'm celebrating the nearly 2000 words I've added to my WIP in the last month. I know 2000 words in a month is not a particularly impressive amount, but it is better than nothing and means that I am still crawling forward when the urge to sit under my desk and cry into an empty cupcake jar is too often overwhelming these days.

And on that cheerful note, I'm out of here. As always, thank you for stopping by. It's much appreciated.

I hope y'all have a wonderful weekend.

    1. I'm currently equating The Store to the Titanic, post iceberg. It'll sink eventually, so I just need to get a spot on a lifeboat somewhere.

And yes, family times are always worth celebrating.

  2. Welcome back!

Yeah as you read yesterday, I know how it feels to write when stuff's difficult in our lives. Congrats on still getting some words down. :-)

  3. Wish I could Hulk Smash you into a better job, but I'm glad you got to hang out with your niece. My own nieces aren't into swords, so you lucked out on that. Actually, you both did.

And about the writing, this is what came up for the Motivational Quote of the Day on my homepage:

"A writer is a writer not because she writes well and easily, because she has amazing talent, because everything she does is golden. In my view, a writer is a writer because even when there is no hope, even when nothing you do shows any sign of promise, you keep writing anyway."

    1. Yes, my niece can be such a little mini-me at times. I love it.

And I love that quote. It's very fitting.

  4. We had noticed your absence!
Hopefully the bets are wrong, unless you have someplace better to go.

    1. I have no place better to go (yet, anyway), so my co-workers are disappointed that every time I walk into The Store, it's not to quit.

  5. Cupcakes in a jar! I've seen these around but never tried one, I need to though! They look amazing.

  6. I did notice you were gone but then I checked your Twitter page and saw you were still alive. Not stalking, just concerned. :)

If you were going to weep, doing it into an EMPTY cupcake jar makes perfect sense. Why ruin a perfectly good cupcake with salty tears?

If you get a chance, check out my Recommended Reading - July post - I gave you a mention. :)

    1. Or a new job.

I'm really trying not to be Hulk-smasked Loki. It's not much fun.

  8. Nice to see you! And 2000 words is nothing to sneeze at. It's progress and that's what counts. I think you deserve a reward - a cupcake perhaps? :)

    What makes them wicked good?

    1. The cupcake in a jar I had yesterday was chocolate and chocolate with some more chocolate. There was chocolate frosting with chocolate sprinkles, chocolate mousse, chocolate cake, some kind of fudge layer and then more chocolate cake.

  9. I, for one, was wondering where the hell you were. But I also have this morbid streak that causes me to speculate that, if a blog isn't updated in a week or two (without notice by the blogger that s/he is going on vacation or taking a break), the person has died unexpectedly and the family has not had time nor inclination to do anything with the person's online "life". . .

I remember hearing about Wicked Good Cupcakes when we lived in Boston, but I never got the chance to try them.

    1. I occasionally speculate that, too...

The Faneuil Hall cupcake location is relatively new. I think it opened in May of this year. Their main location is in Cohasset, MA.

    2. Yeah, we only moved away about a year ago, but I remember hearing about Wicked Good when they were featured on something or in something (a local TV show or a foodie article . . .) We even looked it up and saw we could order online, but then just never did it for some reason.

  10. I still don't understand how you get them out of the jar. Unless you break the jar open like a piggy bank.

    1. It's a mason jar filled with cake and frosting and whatever else. You eat it with a spoon that WGC conveniently includes for you.

    2. Okay, see, I can't get behind having to eat it with a spoon. That's just wrong.

    3. Well, I suppose you could use a fork instead.

    4. Well, a fork makes it all better, I suppose.

  11. I'm sorry to hear about your work troubles. That can be so depressing. On the bright side, yay for fun with your niece, awesome cupcakes (in a jar or running wild on the counter!), and congrats for the 2000 words! Every little bit gets you closer to your goal. Go you! :-)

  13. I hope your job situation changes the way you would like. I''ve never heard of cupcakes in a jar, but I'm sure it's a good thing we don't live near Boston! Good job on your WIP. Two thousand words is a lot! Glad you had fun with your niece.
    Happy weekend.

  15. Mmm, cupcakes. The boy and I made ones today and decorate them with M&Ms. He was kind enough not to eat all the candy before the decorating was done. Or was that me? Hope you find your inner Hulk soon.

  16. I'd hire you, if I had a job to offer. Sorry work sucks. I'm kind of disappointed that I wasn't blogging when I worked retail. The stories!

Perhaps you should open your own cupcake in a jar shop.

2000 words is excellent progress when you're stuck in the awful. The fact that you got anything written at all is a win.

    1. Me opening a cupcake in a jar shop has a couple of problems...

#1: I can't bake. I mean, really, I can't bake. Big budget disaster movies have been made about my culinary failures.

#2: I'd eat all the inventory.

  18. I know the feeling about work, all too well, I'm afraid. I hope things even out and can get your 'work groove' back.

Don't sell yourself short....that's a -great- word count. Heck, I'd kill for that word count, right now, but...alas...work being what it is... sigh.

Anywho, hope you have a great weekend and get some relaxation time in there :)

  19. Congrats on your word count!!!
And sword fighting and swimming sounds like an awesome, fun combo!!! Glad you had a little fun!
Now, go get that green monster on, and pound work like Loki . . . or at least pound the work load like Hulk pounds Loki!
Happy Writing and Hope you have a break soon!

  20. Oh my goodness, cupcakes in a jar? I want! lol
Congratulations on the word count, every word counts, and it really is better than nothing... which is where I'm at for now. I am taking a break but have to get back on it soon.

    Have a great weekend :D

  21. I was at a craft fair near where I live (Northants, England) not long ago and saw some 'cakes in a jar' on sale. Great marketing idea. Sounds as though you have a great relationship with your niece: long may it last.

  22. I did notice that you were missing and I just thought that you were super busy. If I were your niece and you allowed me to eat plenty of sugar, I would be happy too.
2000 words is very good, don't sell yourself short. Sorry that things aren't going so well at work. I love the hulk smash part. And you are so right, you will be "hulk smashing" your way through life again before you know it. Good-luck.

  23. Hang in there--I'm sorry work is giving you so much trouble right now.

Congrats on adding to your WIP, and I'm glad you're enjoying the cupcakes and time with your niece!

I know the hulk smash feeling ;)

  25. You shared our family's favorite movie scene for the last five years. My youngest wants to be the Hulk because of it.

Wishing you more writing time, and a little less "crazy" at work. Seasons, eh? It'll get better. Glad you're still writing, even if it's only a little. Progress is progress.

  26. Yay for the awesome word count and, cupcakes in a jar?!!!! They sound way too tempting.

My work situation, while not as dire as yours, is extremely stressful right now. I'm hoping to get my resume updated and 'out there' this week. I love my bosses and the idea of leaving scares me. But it may come to that.

I hope if you do leave, it's to something better, and that you'll be happy and appreciated.

  27. Thanks for the warning about the cupcakes. I'll be sure to use proper protective equipment. As far as your 2000 words, I always say quality over quantity. If they're 2000 good words, that's better than 20,000 so-so ones. However, you might be a perfectionist like me, and if so make sure not to listen to the demented voice in your head that is never satisfied.

  29. WELCOME BACK! (You were missed. You brighten up the blogging world.)
Well, at least with being Loki, it means you might have an army at your beck and call. That could come in handy.

Empty cupcake jar. That's the saddest thing I've ever heard. (And now I want a cupcake jar, a full one.)

  30. Cupcakes in a jar sounds interesting...I just baked cupcakes this morning, maybe I'll toss them in a jar!

  31. We all need a hiatus sometimes, even if it's not really by choice but by circumstance. Wishing for better job environment for you. But I'm glad you had fun with your niece - it sounds like you had an awesome time. I'm sure your niece will but your sister enough that she'll have no choice but to let her visit again. :) And I agree, adding any on your WIP is a reason to celebrate and is way better than having none added.
