Halfway Point

As we're just over the halfway point of the year, I thought I'd check in with the goals I set for myself at the beginning of 2013 to see just how well (or not well) I'm doing with things.

1. Publish Effigy

Well, it's not published yet, but as it's currently with the proofreader, I am somehow making progress here, and accomplishing this very important goal is not out of the question. There's still a long way to go, though, and I'm sure it's much longer than I think it is.

2. Participate in NaNoWriMo 2013

As it's not yet November, this goal is kind of null and void. But I do have plans to participate. And win.

3. Be a better blogger.

Hahahaha. Yeah. I haven't done so well with the whole blogging thing so far this year. My intention is to blog three times a week (Monday, Wednesday, Friday) but, with the exception of the A to Z Challenge, I'm probably only averaging once a week.

4. Walk, run or bike at least 500 miles.

As of this posting, I have run/walked 171 miles. I'm a little behind. By, like, 100 miles, but I always start slow. It's hard for me to get motivated in February. The temptation to stay cozy and warm under afghans is just too strong to resist.

5. De-clutter

I've made only one trip to Goodwill so far this year. I have another large piles of stuff waiting to go. I could be doing better on this one, but it could be a lot worse.

6. Read 60 books.

According to Goodreads, I've read 49 books so far this year, and I know I've read a few that didn't get listed on Goodreads, so I guess this goal is well in hand. Yay me.

Aaaaaaaaaand.....That's gonna do it for me today. I'm off for a action-packed shift at The Store. Thanks for stopping by and have a great Monday.

  2. You are way ahead on the books - that's good!
And you always visit my blog, so I think you're a good blogger.

    1. Thanks, Alex. If the Ninja Captain thinks I am a good blogger, I must be doing something right. =)

  3. Wow, just the fact that you are reviewing your goals impressed me. I don't' even know where mine are. From what I see you're moving forward and that is half the battle. As Dory (from Disney's Nemo fame) says, "...just keep swimming."

  4. Well, at least you have goals.

    Me, nada.

If I keep my expectations low, and something good happens, then I'll be really happy!

Keep at it. Keep writing. Keep moving.

    1. I do have goals. I may even accomplish one of them. Let's hope it's the first one.

  5. You can still hit most of those.

I'm not motivated to run when it's humid and 100% outside.

    1. I can still hit all of those...well, maybe not the mileage one. And history suggests I won't hit the first one. But I might actually read 60 books this year.

I'm not motivated to run when it's humid and hot either. I walk then.

  6. Great goals, and you're doing so well, especially with the reading goal. Good luck with the running and the publishinh :-)

  8. 49 books!!! I think you're doing great with your reading goal. You're doing great with all your goals.

    1. I guess that could be said for everything but the de-cluttering goal.

  9. As for blogging, my favorite two publish just once a week. It's like a TV show, where you wait for Monday to come around to catch the next episode. I doubt I would've liked "The Love Boat" as much if it was on three times a week.

But hey, if you do blog more, I sure won't complain.

  10. Wait...crap, what do you mean the year is half over? It's too soon for Doomsday news like that. And, yeah, I'll probably only blog once a week during summer. Everyone seems to be gone and doing other things anyway.

    1. You're right. I probably should have eased into it a little more.

    2. The summer blogging slack-off! Woo! While everybody's not paying attention, I'm going to switch my blogging focus to more science. Everyone will come back from vacation and wonder where the rants about writing fiction went. Plus side: more dinos! Maybe.

    3. You can't go wrong with more dinos. Everyone loves dinosaurs, right?

  11. wow, only six months til Christmas? And you sure have read a lot of books - I think I'm only at #30.

    1. It's scary to think of the year like that, that there are only six months until Christmas. I should probably start my shopping now...

  12. Whew! Sounds to me like you're making excellent progress on those goals. I always think it's amazing to track our progress and see exactly how far we've come. I do that with the kids school, and it's mind boggling to see their progress after only a couple months.

    1. Well, I'm not sure how excellent it is, but progress has been made.

  13. Why is it taking you so long to publish Effigy? For crying out loud...I've been hearing about this book for over a year now.

    1. Because I am both pathetic and incompetent.

    2. Wait, did Michael publish his books faster?

      Delete
    3. Well, he has traditionally published two books whereas I'm still failing to self-publish one. So I would say yes.

  14. I'd say you've done rather well! Hard to believe we're half way through the year. Hmmm, I wonder what I've gotten done....

    1. Yeah, I'm not ready to be half way through the year. I really wish I'd gotten more done, but I'd honestly forgotten about a couple of these goals.

  15. You're doing well! I'm way behind on a few of my goals and doing better with others. Would it be cheating if I just altered them a little?!

    ReplyDelete

    1. It most certainly would not be cheating.

  16. For 3, you're doing way better than me. Just put up my first post in what I believe has been a month and a half. Sure I have excuses, but seriously -- a month and a half? And it's a cop-out, too.

I keep sort of half-assedly try NaNoWriMo but this will be the first year I legitimately don't have schoolwork/exams/thesis at the same time. Kind of worried I'll fail again and have no good reason.

    1. Last year was the first year I lost. I'd really like to redeem myself on that front.

  17. You're doing really well! NaNo is tough, but so well worth it. I did it for the first time last year and just about cranked 100,000 words.

Good luck with the rest of your goals.

    1. 100,000 words??? That is so amazing. I am seriously in awe. In my best year, I think I ended up with 70,000 words.

    1. I have posted a few store haiku on my Twitter feed, and I have a store post scheduled for early next month. There's been a lot going on, but it's taken me this long to stop boggling at it all.

  21. Good luck on getting Effigy published. =D

    ReplyDelete
  22. Effigy is at the proofreader? That's major progress. Hooray.

As for blogging three times a week, you should do what I do. I cheat. I write all my posts on Saturday and set them to post during the week. It makes my week so much easier.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Which is a great idea, and not at all cheating, but it would require me to get something done ahead of time, and that's a bigger challenge than posting three times a week. =)

  23. I'd say you're doing pretty well. The best inspiration for decluttering? Have a relative visit! Yikes! And I'm very impressed with your mileage, wow. I need to get off here and go do some walking myself. Good luck with #1!

  26. Are we really half way already? *hangs head*.

Well done for your goals so far, especially your reading one. I've read 13 books so far and I thought that was good. Well, it is for me, I'm quite a slow reader.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I'm well on track with my Goodreads goal (makes me think that it's too low...) but since I only signed up at the end of last year, I didn't want to get carried away and then fall by the wayside...
As for NaNoWriMo - the thought terrifies me... I write in spurts, and way too slow, so I'm wondering if it would work for me...

  28. Progress! If you didn't set any goals in the first place, you probably wouldn't have made nearly as much progress. :)

I'm way behind on my Goodreads Challenge - I've read 30 plus books but my goal is 100!

I'm planning on doing Camp NaNo this July...I think. I have a couple of weeks left to decide. :)

  29. Holy moly! is the year half gone already? I need to get my rear in gear! Thanks for administering a swift kick I needed!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Wow, I'd say you're doing really well on those goals! I got a little freaked out when you mentioned the whole "half-way through the year" thing. I mean, I know it is but...already!?!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Sounds like you have them all well under control.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Your goals sound like mine. "Go for walks: okay. Clean: okay. Read: GREAT!" Some goals are just so much easier to accomplish.

You've still got me on the edge of my seat about the publishing. I keep waiting for the day I can rush off to buy myself a copy.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Wow, you have a lot of goals this year. Good luck with them all!

    ReplyDelete
  34. You can do each and every one of those. I think it's great to set realistic goals and then complete them.

Nano is one of my goals for this year. I crapped out last year, so I'm all the more motivated :)
