Notebooks

I love notebooks.

I'm a writer (or I try to be—some days are more successful than others) and while I have... well, not embraced technology exactly, I have (mostly) accepted its existence and its continuing tendency to encroach farther and farther into my once paper and pen world.

But I will never (never!) give up my notebooks.

Currently, my favorite notebooks come from Staples. They're the 9.5 x 6 inch sugarcane-based Sustainable Earth notebooks, and I can't go into a Staples without leaving with at least one. They're hardy, so they hold up to being shoved in and out of my bags, but they're small enough to fit in my bags. And they have a handy storage pocket in which I tuck a copy of whatever random scene I'm trying to work out now.

Once, my lovely and talented goddaughter gave me a special notebook for Christmas. It looked like this:

But as I am far less artistically inclined than the kids in my life, I usually cover them with stickers so they end up looking something like this:

My current notebook

Inside they generally look like this:

and this:

 or this:

A list of edits needing to be made

But my lovely and talented niece draws in each and every one (not yet the new one) so occasionally, you come across a page that looks like this:

Are you a notebook person, too? If so, do you have a preferred brand?

  1. I use a notebook, but it's usually just the standard kind you get at the store.

  2. I have two of those Sustainable Earth notebooks and I absolutely love them! I plan to get more the next time I go to Staples. They're so strong and sturdy and I don't have to be dainty. I can rip pages out and cross things out etc. They contain my huge messy scrawling handwriting...and thoughts. :)

  3. Definitely notebooks. Mine currently has graphing paper inside, and for some reason that I can't explain, I love it. And I love notebooks.

    1. Oh, I have a couple graphing paper notebooks. They're so much fun. And I can't explain why either. If I'd been handed such a thing during high school, I would've broken out with hives or something. But now, they are awesome.

  4. I tend to start in my notebook, but once I find my topic and get things going, I switch to the computer...otherwise I will go through pages of cross outs and arrows before I even get on stanza done..... I'm glad I found your blog. I'm also doing the A to Z, but with poetry.

  5. I LOVE NOTEBOOKS!

I love school supplies. I love new pens and folders and notebooks and loose leaf and...

    Yep, I've got issues.

    1. Hey, if loving office/school supplies is wrong, then I don't want to be right.

  6. I love new notebooks. Pretty ones, or boring ones. :) There's just something exciting about a brand new notebook.

  7. My wife loves notebooks. Me, I'd just draw in them all day instead of write.

    1. If I had any of your artistic talent, I'd probably do the same.

  8. I love notebooks, too, although I don't use them as much as I used to as I do the majority of my writing on my computer now. But I used to write all my first drafts in notebooks and if I stacked mine up they'd probably look like yours! And I prefer the three subject (five is actually better but harder to find) Mead, college ruled, with pockets for maps and odd notes :)

  9. I like notebooks and organizational office supplies as well...yeah, I know I'm weird, but still :)

Freehand writing isn't something I do a lot of, but have been thinking of taking it up again.

  10. Notebooks are one of the best things ever made. I have a whole shelf full of them. They are just so handy, and fun to decorate or get different designs.

I didn't know Stables had them. I will have to get one and see how much I like it. I usually get them as gifts so I never really have to buy. (It is the, takes no time to think of a gift gift for authors. I can always be assured of getting one from someone for my birthday or Christmas.)

  11. I get a stack of notebooks every year for Christmas from my mom. Plain ones and pretty ones. I don't have a preferred kind. I should use them more often, but sometimes I get random pieces of paper I have to copy or tape into the books!

    1. A lot of my notebooks have post-its taped into them. Or napkins or paper towels, or whatever happened to be lying around at the moment when inspiration struck.

  12. I use a piece of folded paper that's always in my pocket, and then type them up on the computer when the stack gets out of hand.

But usually I just sing one of those never-ending songs about beer or Henry VIII. :-)

  13. Oh yeah! I'm definitely a hand-drafter, but then you might know it. I kind of can't stop telling writers about this particular quirk of mine.

I'm not brand specific when it comes to my notebooks, but I prefer them to be hard-covers. Makes them easier to write on, regardless of where I am.

Also, I prefer black fountain pens. I think I associate blue with school work. And fountain pens are just easier to write with than anything else I've tried. And as an added bonus. They make even my crappy hand-writing look artistic. ;-)

    1. I'll be blogging about my favorite writing instruments later on this month, but I also have a lovely selection of fountain pens.

  14. Burned all my notebooks, what good are notebooks?!

Sorry, the Talking Heads song always pops into my head at the sight of notebooks. But after this post I feel free to confess my extreme happiness when the back to school sales get under way at the end of summer and I am able to buy an armload of notebooks for $1. It's bliss. :))

  15. Aw, too cute!

And yes I love notebooks too. Have tons of them that look similar. I have one for every story I venture to write and they become my story bible. :)

  16. I love notebooks too - any old notebook will do me! I am addicted to getting new ones.

  17. I'm addicted to buying notebooks and then losing them so I can use them. Then I'll find them months later under the couch or something.

It's particularly bad to be addicted to buying notebooks when you worked in a book store. Bad bad bad.

  18. I'm someone who never thought I could write long hand anymore . . . until just a few days ago. I'm working on a project that must get out the door and time is ticking. I decided the internet was too much of a distraction so I forced myself to start writing in an old composition book away from the computer and well hot damn! I got so much done. I'm off to get a shiny new notebook to keep writing in and it's kinda exciting. (:

  19. I love my notebooks! Although I never thought of covering them with stickers...

  20. I keep a notebook with me at school so I can scrawl various ideas in. But I'm not much of a general long hand person. I get such awful writer's cramp that I prefer typing just about anything I can type.

  21. I love notebooks. I have one that I take to work with me every day in case of a sudden rush of inspiration. I also have a new leather-bound journal I purchased from Pottery Barn in which I write most of my current poetry.

  22. It's cool how you personalize them. It reminds me of how I used to draw on the brown bag wraps on my school text books.

I'm not a notebook person. I hate writing stuff by hand--I grip too hard and press down too hard on the page, which means long periods of writing makes my hands hurt. If I have an idea, there's always a computer, phone or tablet within reach. I just hope there's never a blackout.

  23. You suck! I can read -your- handwriting just in this little pictures. I wrote my stuff with my own hand, and I can decipher it with the whole thing right in front of my face!
    I repeat: you suck!

Um, why, yes, I do, upon occasion, use a notebook.
Actually, I always have something going in a notebook that I can be working on when I'm away from my computer.

  24. wow, your writing is so neat!!!!!!!!
My notebooks are a mess of bad handwriting, crossing outs, and arrows (and doodles).

  25. I love notebooks but they are usually full of indecipherable scribbling - it was easy to read when I was writing it but when I return it has turned to gibberish.

Although writing in notebooks is better than another habit I have - scribbling on bits of paper that then sink to the bottom of my handbag never to be seen again. At least in a notebook they stick together. I'll have to use them more often.

  26. I am obsessed with notebooks, especially the ones that 10 for $1 on the school sales, which is when I stock up. I can't write without them.

  27. Let me ask you this, have you ever been stared at in a stationary store for running your fingers over the pages of notebooks and sighing because it 'felt' beautiful? Have you ever had your partner give you the 'I can't believe you just did that' look in a stationary store for saying loudly 'this is an awesome notebook, something amazing is meant to be written in this and I just have to have it!' only to take it home and have it sit on a shelf or in a drawer for over a year because you can't bare to defile it's pages? I have lol. I have a wicker drawer full of small notebooks and a desk drawer full of larger A4 ones, I have to be dragged out of any shop that sells notebooks because I'm handling them like a lover and my wife is afraid that I'm going to add to my collection...I am I'm afraid...an addict. :) Thank you for the post.
